What about the cross burning group that wants to “hold court” in the large study room?

No work...no pay? http://www.hbculibraries.org/weblog/2006/02/no_workno_pay_1.html A few weeks back we discussed who's in charge during a time of transition, particularly when the library director has moved on. Who does what? How does the work continue?

Continuing the "tricky situations" of library administrators theme, today we're talking about those staff that just don't work, to the detriment of the library operations. What happens when supervisors and/or managers won’t/don’t manage?

What difficulties have you faced in managing others, or in supervising staff that manage others. How do you handle that?

Researching the impact of the closing of the CAU School of Library and Information Studies http://www.hbculibraries.org/weblog/2006/01/researching_the.html Risa Mulligan is a Master's of Library Science candidate at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She is interested in studying the closing of the Clark Atlanta University School of Library and Information Studies.

She approached the HBCU Library Alliance with the thought that some of the people involved in the HBCU Library Alliance would be willing to speak with her.

Who’s In Charge? http://www.hbculibraries.org/weblog/2006/01/whoas_in_charge.html Your director/dean has retired, resigned…GONE! An individual has been appointed to serve as the interim Dean/Director; however this person has no interest in the library.

Is it business as usual? Do you move forward w/your stated goals and objectives not knowing what the future holds? Or simply “maintain” and place everything on hold until the position is filled?

Who is in charge during a time of transition?

What would you do if your ship came in? http://www.hbculibraries.org/weblog/2005/12/what_would_you.html A few of us, either by way of grants, special appropriations, donations, end of the year dollars – whatever – have received funds that must be spent YESTERDAY! You know...the old “use or lose it dollars”. If so, how did you spend it...and why?

And if you’ve NEVER received a windfall, just for the heck of it...pretend! Something to think about.

What would you do if your library received a million dollars...okay, let’s be real...$50,000?

Disaster Recovery from a Library Perspective http://www.hbculibraries.org/weblog/2005/09/disaster_recove.html The HBCU Library Alliance is based in the southeast and this year we've had our fill of hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding, along with a summer of sweltering heat and humidity. Therefore, we thought it apropos to devote some attention to library disaster recovery policies.

In light of the havoc Hurricane Katrina has wreaked along the gulf coast, of particular interest are those libraries dealing with water damage from flooding, heat, and high temperatures. HBCUs in the areas have been affected and the potential for damage and loss of library materials, is a reality.

How about it...care to share? What steps do you take to mitigate damage and recover functioning after a blow from mother nature? Do tell...
